Dist: 12km Elev: 850m Time: 5h Difficulty: 3/5 When this year's annual "Bear Bait" hiking trip became a round of golf to accommodate growing families and unpredictable work schedules, Lloyd and I decided to plan a mountain adventure for just the two of us. Arnica Lake was selected as our objective based on a number of variables, including a sporty (but not masochistic) level of physical challenge, and the promise of beautiful autumn scenery without the hordes of larch-frenzied Instragrammers known to frequent other areas of Banff this time of year.
The hike was exactly as advertised: consistently steep and treed, with just enough interesting views of nearby mountains to sustain our motivation to press on to Arnica Lake. The lake really was quite stunning, particularly this time of year, but Lloyd and I agreed it didn't have a "stay a while" vibe due to the high volume of foot traffic and accompanying business. We lingered just long enough for photos and a quick snack, before electing to extend our journey a little further in pursuit of a small unnamed ridge above the lake affording superior views of the area according to hiking folklore.
It turns out the legends were true. We easily found the ridge and enjoyed exceptional views and stimulating conversation (all in solitude) for nearly an hour before starting our return journey. I had high hopes for this trip, for both the scenery and getting to connect in a meaningful way with Lloyd, and I came home feeling like they were all greatly exceeded. Another awesome day in the mountains!
